The movie Woman in the window 2021 starts with Ana (Ana Fox) opening her eyes from sleep. She lives in a big empty house with a cat after departing from her husband Edward. Edward lives away with their daughter Olivia, but Ana talks to them every day.
Anna suffers from agoraphobia and her housebound case leads her to stay indoors and observe all of her next-door neighbors from a second-story window. She had nothing to do. Her psychologist visits her once a week and her tenant David assists her out with necessities. David had permission to her residence through the basement door. Ana was fond of him.
A new family moves into the neighborhood. During a session visit, Ana’s psychologist talks about her feelings regarding the new neighbors. The new family was ‘The Russels’. Alistair Russels, and Jane Russels. Ana comes to know from the real estate broker, the family moved from Boston. Mr. Russels was a banker and that the family was peculiar because they had nothing more, that Ana could find online.
Psychologists: I am sure you will figure it out.
Ana: What the f**k Karl?
Psychologist replies: Curiosity is an indication of a decreased depression pattern.
Ana: People who snoop on their neighbors don’t ruin themselves?
Psychologists: Let’s try this. People who try suicide lose the right to joke about it.
She had a problem that resulted from the medication ‘Elevan’ which makes her hallucinate. Ana assumed drinking was a way out of it. She even grieved about the medicine to her ex-husband on phone convincing him, she was not feeling good about it.
Ana never leaves the house. She is used to drinking in a way that has almost made her adherent. Every day she would view from the window and notice all the movements of her neighbors.
One day the doorbell rings and the Russels kid comes to visit her. She declines the visit but opens the door and lets him in. His name was Ethan. He brings her a gift.
Ethan: My mom asked me to deliver it to you, like … days ago.
Ana: I think that I’m the one deemed to be giving you a gift, eh…
Ethan liked the cat and talks about her job. During the discussion, Ana notices Ethan had problems communicating. The boy was 16 years old. He narrates to her that he is finding it hard to cope with the changes in his life and submits, his father Alistair is abusive.
After talking about each other they became friends. Ethan borrows some movies from Ana’s collection and leaves.
It was Tuesday and Halloween arrives. During a seizure, Anna becomes senseless while trying to attend to some kids outside her house. When she opens her eyes a woman attends her. The woman addresses herself as Ethan’s mother.
Ana: You must be Jane Russel. Your son came by, Ethan.
After a small chat, they spend the evening together and discuss family and Ethan. During the time Ana takes a photograph of her cat while having drinks with her new friend. After Jane leaves the house the husband comes to Ana and asks her about his wife.
Mr. Russels: I am sorry to bother you…I just wanted to know…Well, I m just curious if any of my family has come around to see you this evening.
Ana: No, No, I —I’ve been alone.
After the event, she started to closely monitor the behavior of the husband through her camera.
One night, Anna eyewitnesses Jane being knifed to death in the living room through her window.
She contacts the police but they do not consider her, claiming everyone in the family is fine. Alistair appears along with “Jane” who, to the shock of Anna, is another woman from the one she met.
She begins watching on the Russell family. Another night Ana detected noises from the neighbor and asks her resident David if he heard anything. David insists he did not hear or see anything. That evening she learns David was once in a penitentiary and broke his parole restrictions.
Ana’s mental state was deteriorating as she was too much into Wine. She receives an unknown e-mail with a photo of her sleeping. Ana gets scared.
She again reaches the detectives, who are joined by the Russells and David in Anna’s house, and Anna breaks down when it is exposed by a detective that Edward and Olivia are dead as a consequence of a car wreck that Anna accidentally caused.
Anna is agoraphobic as a consequence and her medication has let her have hallucinations and chats with people who are not there. In reality, her husband and child were dead long ago. She always had imagination about talking to her daughter on phone.
Anna apologizes to the Russell family and stops continuing her doubts. She films a video on her cell phone, planning to perform suicide by overdose.
While she was scrolling through her photo memories Ana finds the photo she took while having drinks with Jane.
In one of the wine glass, Jane’s reflection was showing. Now Ana can prove she is real.
Anna explains to David that the photo proves that she is real and that she was not hallucinating. After listening to Ana David admits the original Jane she met is a woman named Katie Melli, Ethan’s biological mother.
He accepts that he had met her too and spent a night together in the basement.
David: Her name is Katie.
Ana: What?
David: Ethan the son.. she is the biological mother.
Ana: You spent a night with her.
David: Wednesday. One night. She was a total disaster.
David informs Ana that Katie had been chasing the Russell family, attempting to get close to Ethan.
Understanding the story Ana request David to support her to prove she was not making things. That she was not under the influence of medicines and that she had seen her killed.
David declines to help Anna prove the fact; he is then suddenly stabbed and killed by Ethan, who had been hiding inside the house.
After killing David, Ethan confesses to Anna that he murdered Katie and is a serial killer, having also killed Alistair’s superintendent in Boston, and now plans to kill Anna.
Ethan had been sneaking into her house all week with a stolen door key, and he was the one who photographed her sleeping. After realising that Ethan was about to kill her, Ana bolts to the roof, attacking Ethan with a wine bottle. Ethan follows her to the rooftop where they fight until she pushes Ethan through the skylight to his death.
After killing Ethan, Ana is now in hospital. As Anna improves in the hospital, Detective Little revisits and convinces her they have captured Alistair Russels and Jane Russels for encouraging Ethan to cover up Katie’s crime and that they have discovered Katie’s body.
Detective Little tells Ana that he watched Anna’s suicide video but hands back her phone to let her delete it before she has to pay it for evidence. He regrets not believing her before.
Nine months following, Anna now is calm and healthful. She says goodbye to her apartment before she migrating out and on with her life. She, now no longer scared of the outside world.
