“I was a tender 12 years old the first time I experienced a deep and painful loss. The cause of her death is still a mystery to me. And I often wonder if there was anything I could have done to prevent it”.
The movie starts with Madison (The central character) narrating a painful essay she wrote in her college application for Northwestern’s Liberal Arts Program.
It is Christmas time, and you would hear her mom calling out for her from another room, and just like any other parent, her mom asked her to check on the turkey she prepared for the family dinner.
Life is normal and goofy for Madison, a typical unkept teenage life.
Madisons mom: Put the rolls in the oven
Madison: Fine!
While conversing with her mom from the kitchen a guy in a cape enters the house. He sneaked in and surprised Madison scaring her in the kitchen.
Jimmy: Got ya!
Madison: Holy shit!Jimmy! You scared me!
She shows him the necklace he gifted her for Christmas.
Jimmy: I gave you that?
Madison: This morning!
Jimmy: OO, It looks so different outside the box.
They start kissing each other. The mom kept telling her to check the turkey.
Madison: Mm, hmm. Yeah. Mom, I checked it. It’s done.
Soon the mother enters the kitchen to check on the turkey, finding the young couple kissing each other she gets upset.
Mom: It’s 165 degrees. How would you know that when you are doing that?
The mother starts checking on the turkey herself as she did not believe Madison, and both, daughter and the mother started arguing inside the kitchen when the turkey accidentally slips from the tray and falls on the garbage bin.
That evening they had dinner without any turkey. The family with Jimmy and Madison’s uncle Andy started to converse about Turkey.
Father: Yeah, This is a good opportunity to really appreciate the sides of a dinner and uh… not focus so much on the turkey.
Mom: Kids make mistakes all the time.
Madison: I’m not a kid. I‘m 18 years old. And it was an accident, Mom.
Just when Madison started arguing about the whole story that happened that afternoon with the turkey, Uncle Andy tries to divert the topic and changes the conversation. The Mother and the daughter always had a tug of war going on with each other.
Uncle Andy: Well, that’s great! Madison, did you finish that essay for your college application?
Madison: Yeah, Uncle Andy. I—I actually did. Umm…
Uncle Andy: Great.
Madison: Mom, did you have a chance to read it yet?
Mom: I did.
Madison: And?
Mom: Honestly, I don’t think there’s any college that’s gonna accept that essay.
Madison wrote about her dead pet goldfish ‘Goldie’ on her application and her mom didn’t like it. With the topic being changed, the daughter and the mom again started to have arguments at the dinner table because Madison thought the essay was good. Madison was the center of the conversation. Everything the family talked about at the dinner table seemed offensive to her. She just appears being bullied with all the funny stories she did during her childhood and that’s Madison’s life.
Getting upset, She walks out of the house and sits in her garage lamenting alone. Her boyfriend follows and checks on her. He got Beer bottles and some weed for her to smoke but Madison was still mad at everything.
Jimmy: Come on, We were just joking around.
Madison tells her boyfriend about how she feels about being treated like a child by her parents all the time. She also complains about her mother who never appreciates her hard work. She Loved Uncle Andy and for her, he is the only person who supports her.
While they were talking suddenly Madison saw a torchlight inside one of the neighbor’s houses from their garage. The neighbor was on a holiday and this made the couple curious to check on the property, and they both enter the house.
They didn’t see anything inside and thinking it to be a result of some bad wiring they shake off their curiosity and spends their evening together at the house doing stupid stuff. Both sleep together in the empty house later that night.
Late that night someone with a torch enters the house and Jimmy wakes up, but he was too sleepy to get up. The next morning the couple wakes up late and to their surprise when they came out of the bedroom, the furniture was all scattered on the floor. Someone broke into the house that night while they were asleep. Realizing the house was robbed, the couple started to panic and called the cops.
The cops come to the house and started interrogating both of them separately. Madison tells her part of the story and so did Jimmy. Both tell the truth to the cops. Believing them both the cops then meet the parents and leaves the scene with a notice that till the scene is investigated the family won’t be able to leave the place under any circumstances.
The father decides to send Madison to her Uncles place till the investigation is over.
Madison: Guys, I can’t stay here. I’m gonna miss Jennifers New Year party.
Mom: Oh, I’m sorry. You’re gonna Miss Jennifers New Years Party? Where is my responsible daughter?
Madison: I am responsible Mom!
Another argument erupts at the house in front of the cops and both Jimmy and Madison were sent to Uncle Andy’s place.
After they reached uncle Andy’s house to their surprise they found his house was robbed too and called the police. After the cops arrived in that house and the scene was examined uncle Andy decides to stay in the Family house.
Uncle Andy: Well, we’re gonna stay at the family house.
After reaching the family house Madison and Jimmy offer a plan to Uncle Andy. They insist on catching the robbers and clear their names from the suspect’s list.
Uncle Andy: You will do no such thing.
Madison: But the police thinks we did.
After having a common ground with Madison and Jimmy, Uncle Andy goes to the market to buy some food for the stay. The movie flips higher when the robbers appeared for the first time in the scene, in a black SUV selling the stolen furniture in an Antique shop.
On the other hand, Madison and Jimmy are alone in the family house. Having nothing to do, and after getting bored, both the couple starts installing locks in their bedrooms and also installs extra lights with timers in the Christmas tree. They also add a warning sign “Beware of Dogs” in the door. Installs some DIY self-made alarms. In short, they transform the entire house into a trap zone.
When uncle Andy returned to find the traps and alarms installed he gets irritated.
Uncle Andy: You want to protect yourselves like responsible adults?
Madison&Jimmy: Yes
Uncle Andy introduced them to a bunker room, they didn’t know about, and gave them guns and tries to teach them how to shoot but finding it hard he decides not to supply them guns, and instead gives them two BB guns so that they could scare if an intruder happens to breaks in.
The robbers on the other hand are ready for their next house. Packs all their gears before the sun sets in, and leaves their hideout.
Back in the family house, Uncle Andy sits with Jimmy and Madison and teaches them a card game. After a game, they watch a movie together when the robbers arrive at the same house they were stationed. The robbers break into the house through the back door and sneak into the garage.
After uncle Andy and the two couple were done with their games and drinks they decide to sleep. When Uncle Andy takes a final round of the house, he finds the back door broken and before he could call the cops he gets captured by the two robbers.
Madison hears the noise and decides to call the cops but the phone was dead. Jimmy finds the car key and they both decide to drive to the police station and inform about the robbery. The keys were not Andy’s car keys but they were the robber’s car keys. They open the robber’s cars but didn’t know to drive THE CAR. The car had a manual transmission.
The robbers soon find Madison and Jimmy inside the car and arrest them back into the house. During the arrest, the woman robber shoots at the tire. Now the car has flat tires.
Back in the house Uncle Andy, Madison and Jimmy are tied up and lined together. They are threatened to cooperate, and the robbers start working on the flat tires. The robbers were two couples trying to make some money by selling antiques robbing houses.
The female robber was a dumb one, she even helps the hostages with water to drink ending up on a trap they installed that afternoon. During the mishap, they saw the robbers’ faces, and the situation got tensed.
The robbers go back to the car, and the husband robber decides to kill them as they know their identity now.
Inside the house, Andy insists they should cooperate with the robbers, but Madison and Jimmy convinces Andy to do something
“What if they kill us?”
Andy takes out the pocket knife from Jimmys back pocket and cuts through the ropes freeing themselves. They secretly open the basement door, and madison and jimmy go inside while Uncle Andy closes the door from outside. When Andy was closing the door of the basement, the robber finds Andy and pushes him which makes him trip and fall making him unconscious.
“Where are the others?”.
The husband robber decides to kill Andy, but the wife convinces him not to kill him.
‘Wait we cant get rid of him now, Cause they’ll never come out if he’s dead”
Madison and Jimmy remained silent under the basement listening to everything the robbers were doing. The Husband robber was very angry. He gives his gun to his wife and takes charge of Andy’s body.
“I am getting rid of the body”
Madison and Jimmy, after hearing the conversation of the robbers decided to give themselves in and requests the female robber not to kill them. They wanted to stop the male robber from killing Andy.
They convince the female robber that they will testify for her in the court, and that she doesn’t have to worry about anything. Soon the female robber helps them out. Madison takes the gun from her and finds the Male Robber who was digging a hole in the ice to get rid of Uncle Andy’s body.
The wife robber was so scared of the situation that she decided to leave after calling the cops. When Madison finds the male robber she threatened him to drop his Axe and leave before the cops came, but the robber started to resist, and madison pulls off the trigger killing him in the spot.
The cops arrive at the scene and take them to custody where Uncle andy and Jimmy were interrogated separately.
They were able to make a case that the couple acted in self-defense. Jimmy was caught for weed too and his case was complicated. Later they came to know that the female robber never made out from the town. She was spotted by State Troopers and was arrested. Madisons parents forgave her for all the stupidity and provided invaluable support to Madison. For the first time, she felt she was being loved by her mother.
Uncle Andy makes a full recovery too but he couldn’t remember the robbery well. She penned down the whole story in her application as an essay and movie end.
